OUT on the River

A Weekend Canoe Trip for LGBTQ+ Youth (Ages 12–17)

Join us October 9–12, 2026 (Indigenous Peoples’ Day Weekend) for one of our signature Campfire Institute programs—OUT on the River.

This is a 3-night wilderness canoe trip, traveling more than 25 miles along a beautiful river that winds through Maine and New Hampshire. We’ll camp along the way on sandy beaches and cook meals together outdoors.

The weekend begins with a night of camping by the river. The next morning, we pack up and head out on the water, paddling downstream over the course of the trip. Days include a mix of paddling, swimming, relaxing on sandbars, and time around camp.

This is a participatory, team-based experience. Everyone plays a role in the group—helping carry gear, pack boats, set up and break down camp, and contribute to meals. It’s a great opportunity to build confidence, learn outdoor skills, and be part of a supportive group working together.

No prior canoeing or camping experience is required. We’ll teach the skills needed along the way.

This trip is designed to create a space where LGBTQ+ youth can spend time outdoors with peers, build connections, and feel comfortable being themselves. Many participants and families have shared how meaningful these experiences have been, and we’re proud to continue offering them.
